Did you know The West Highland was 40 last year, it was officially opened on 6th October 1980, it all started of with a post from Tom Hunter who was an ex RAF man He wanted a walk from Glasgow to the Highlands, Fort William was chosen as the end point. In the summer of 1969 was the beginning of the task for route surveying that was given the go ahead in 1967, the route was surveyed by Fiona Rose in the 1970s and in 1974 the final proposals were approved the trail was opened by Lord Mansfield it was Scotland’s first officially designated long distance route, it is now designated by NatureScot as one of Scotland’s Great Trails
