Yorkshire 3 Peaks in 12 Hours
Take on one of the UK’s best-known mountain challenges with Northern Guiding. The Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge covers around 24 miles and includes an overall ascent of about 1,600 metres. The aim is to complete the route within 12 hours. Walking over Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-Ghent in one day.
This is a demanding walk, but it also offers a huge sense of achievement. You will be part of a guided group, sharing the experience with similar people as you take on each stage of the challenge together. Many walkers also use the event to raise money for charity, making the day even more rewarding.
What to Expect on the Day
The walk starts from Ribblehead, where we begin the climb towards Whernside. From there, the route continues towards Ingleborough before heading down into Horton-in-Ribblesdale. The final section takes us up Pen-y-Ghent before completing the challenge.
You can expect a long day on your feet. With varied ground, steep climbs and changing weather. During the challenge, walkers may burn up to 7,000 calories and often need around 3 to 5 litres of water. Good footwear, suitable clothing, food and plenty of water are essential.
Fully Guided Mountain Challenge
This event is led by a qualified mountain leader, so you do not need to navigate the route yourself. Your guide will help keep the group moving safely and at a suitable pace. While also making decisions based on the weather and conditions.
If you reach Horton and feel unable to continue, there is a train station where you can make your own way back to Ribblehead. This gives walkers a clear option if they need to end the challenge early.
